StartupBlink’s 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Report Is Out, and Here’s Why It Matters for Malaysian Startups

The Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025 by StartupBlink has been released, and for Malaysian startup stakeholders, it’s packed with key insights—some encouraging, some calling for reflection.

Although Malaysia dropped slightly in global rankings (from 43rd to 44th), we’ve climbed to 2nd place in Southeast Asia. This proves that our ecosystem is gaining momentum. (Global Startup Ecosystem Index 2025: Malaysia Ranks 44th Globally, 2nd in Southeast Asia)

Some of the key points worth noting are:

  • Kuala Lumpur remains a startup hotbed and was recognized for its success in fintech (16th in payments worldwide)—a huge win for Malaysia’s tech scene.
George Town is now the country’s fastest-growing ecosystem, surging 40%+ and jumping 47 spots globally.
  • Johor Bahru and newcomer Kuching are also making waves, signaling growth beyond the Klang Valley.

As someone who’s been directly providing PR services to local startups since 2012, I’ve seen firsthand how strategic storytelling can elevate startups, helping them secure funding, attract talent and partners, and stand out in a crowded market. This report by StartupBlink reinforces a crucial lesson: Visibility is non-negotiable for growth.

Why PR Should Be a Priority, Not an Afterthought:

  • Credibility = Opportunity: Media features and thought leadership position you as an industry leader, not just another name in a pitch deck.
  • Investors & Customers Take Notice: A strong narrative builds trust and opens doors.
  • Ecosystems Thrive on Shared Success: When startups like Malaysia’s fintech champions gain global recognition, it lifts everyone.

To founders: Don’t wait until you’re “big enough” for PR. The best time to shape your story is now—before someone else does it for you.

Thrilled to play a small part in Malaysia’s startup journey.

Let’s keep climbing!
