Recently, three seasoned journalists from The Star — Aida Ahmad, Farid Wahab, and Fazleena Aziz—came together for a video podcast session to discuss their profession.
As someone who has always been fascinated by the world of news and reporting, I found this candid conversation offered a valuable glimpse into the realities of life as a journalist.
Their discussion, which lasted about an hour and two minutes on YouTube, was both comprehensive and insightful.
I appreciated it when Farid took the time to explain wire services to the viewers and provided examples. This explanation was valuable, as I’ve noticed a lack of awareness about these types of services in our society.
As someone who writes press releases regularly, I was drawn to a story Aida shared towards the end of the podcast. She recounted how someone had asked her colleague to write a press release for them. This further highlights the general lack of awareness about journalism and press releases specifically.
This conversation confirmed my personal observation about how many people, across generations, in our society are still unaware of the roles of journalism. Therefore, I find it educational. It shed light on the complex realities of newsrooms. As Fazleena said, “What happens behind the publication, there’s a lot of work that goes into it.”
It’s a rare opportunity to hear firsthand insights into the process of news reporting.
If you’re curious about the inner workings of journalism or considering a career in the field, I recommend watching this video podcast.
Final thought: With everything going on in the world today, media literacy should not be taken lightly. I certainly hope my small effort of sharing content of this nature helps.
